Ochsner Lafayette General Medical Center

- Lafayette, Louisiana

Technical Hurdles:As the largest full-service medical facility in Lafayette, LA, the 367-bed Ochsner Lafayette General Medical Center required a complete modernization of its emergency power systems to support ongoing expansions and critical care needs. ADG played a key role in the facility-wide MEP upgrades, including the design and oversight of a 2.4 MW emergency power system. Replacing and upgrading multiple generators, integrating automatic paralleling gear, and ensuring compliance with NFPA 70 emergency power branch separation standards were significant technical challenges, particularly in a fully operational hospital environment.

Logistical Constraints:Working within an active healthcare facility required carefully sequenced construction to avoid disrupting patient care. The project included replacing two 800kW diesel-fueled auxiliary generators, installing a new 800kW natural gas generator, and integrating all three units with automatic paralleling gear. A second phase involved installing two 1000kW diesel-fueled generators to power twelve new operating suites and ancillary spaces, with capacity for a future seven-story tower. The design ensured redundancy so each generator could independently handle full emergency power loads.

Client Satisfaction & Benefits

The client praised ADG for delivering uninterrupted, code-compliant emergency power capabilities that exceed operational requirements. The upgraded system now provides emergency power not only to critical areas but also to elevators and non-critical patient care spaces, enhancing safety, functionality, and preparedness for emergencies.

Advanced Technology :ADG designed and implemented automatic paralleling gear to connect multiple generators into a unified emergency power network. The system was built to NFPA 70 standards for emergency branch separation — Critical Branch, Life Safety Branch, and Equipment Branch — making it the first of its kind in the region.
