McNeese State University Health & Human Performance Arena

- Lake Charles, Louisiana

Technical Hurdles:This four-story, 145,820-square-foot Basketball Arena and Education Complex at McNeese State University required the integration of MEP/FP systems to serve a wide range of spaces, including a 4,100-seat arena, concessions, suites, a practice gym, training and locker rooms, administration offices, classrooms, and a multipurpose room. ADG’s design challenge was to engineer air-cooled chillers, hot water boilers, and variable volume air handling units capable of providing reliable comfort and ventilation for both athletic and academic uses. The arena also required a dedicated smoke removal system to meet life safety codes in large public assembly spaces.

Logistical Constraints:Coordinating mechanical and electrical infrastructure across varied space types — from large open arenas to specialized training areas and classrooms — required careful zoning for efficiency and control. The smoke removal system had to be seamlessly integrated into the arena’s structural and architectural design, ensuring compliance without compromising aesthetics or functionality. The building’s full sprinkler coverage required precise coordination between plumbing, fire protection, and structural elements.

Client Satisfaction & Benefits

The university praised ADG for delivering high-performance building systems that ensure athlete comfort, enhance spectator experience, and maintain operational efficiency for academic and athletic programs. The design supports large event crowds while providing comfortable learning environments in the education complex.

Advanced Technology :ADG incorporated energy-efficient air-cooled chillers, hot water boiler systems, and VAV air handling units with hot water heat to optimize comfort and efficiency. The arena’s smoke removal system was designed for rapid air clearance during emergencies, enhancing safety for occupants.
