South Cameron High School

- Cameron, Louisiana

Technical Hurdles:Following the devastation of Hurricane Rita, Associated Design Group, Inc. provided full Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, and Fire Protection (MEP/FP) design services for the replacement of South Cameron High School. The new 102,000-square-foot facility includes classrooms, offices, a kitchen, a cafetorium, and library spaces—elevated 14 feet above grade for storm resilience. The HVAC design incorporated a mix of variable volume split system DX air handling units serving classrooms through VAV boxes, and constant volume split system DX units for administrative areas. Specialized exhaust systems were integrated for restrooms, science labs, and kitchen ventilation.

Logistical Constraints:Plumbing systems included domestic water piping, sanitary sewer and vent piping, and natural gas distribution for both kitchen equipment and the facility’s emergency generator. Fire protection design featured a wet pipe sprinkler system served by a dedicated fire pump throughout the elevated structure, while commons and parking areas beneath the first floor were safeguarded with a corrosion-resistant dry pipe system. A DDC-based temperature controls system provided centralized, efficient control of mechanical operations.
